Yokohama

Japan's second-largest city, a historic port less than half an hour south of Tokyo by train.

Character
Yokohama grew from a small fishing village after its port opened to foreign trade in 1859. It has a modern harbour district at Minato Mirai, the largest of Japan's three Chinatowns, and old Western houses on the Yamate hill. Waterfront parks, piers and museums sit within a short train or bus ride of each other.
Why it stands out
The hilltop Yamate area, with its parks and free Western houses, is a scenic break from busier spots such as Minato Mirai and Chinatown.
Getting there
From Tokyo: JR Tokaido Line from Shinagawa, about 15 minutes; Tokyu Toyoko Line from Shibuya, about 25 minutes (¥310); Keikyu Line from Shinagawa, about 20 minutes; Tokaido Shinkansen to Shin-Yokohama, about 15 minutes. From Shin-Osaka: Nozomi to Shin-Yokohama, about 1 hour 53 minutes. Haneda Airport is on the Keikyu Line and about 30 minutes by car; Narita is about 90 minutes by car.
Seasons
May is a good month for walking, and cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April. The rainy season starts in June, and summer is hot and humid, with nights around 25°C. September brings more rain and possible typhoons. Winter is fairly mild, and Chinatown holds Chinese New Year events.
Watch-outs
June is the rainy season, and September can bring typhoons. The Landmark Tower Sky Garden observatory is closed for renovation until at least 2028. The Foreigners' Cemetery opens only from 12:00 to 16:00 on weekends and holidays, and is closed in January and August.
