Tokyo

A waterfront district of man-made islands in Tokyo Bay, with malls, museums and bay views close to central Tokyo and Haneda Airport.

Character
Odaiba is a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, redeveloped from the 1990s, and most of it is walkable. It has large malls, a science museum, a sandy beach where swimming is not allowed, and views of Rainbow Bridge. Next door, Ariake has Tokyo Big Sight, the Ariake Garden complex and sports venues such as Ariake Coliseum.
Why it stands out
Ariake lies a few Yurikamome stops past the main Odaiba malls, and the Yume no Ohashi footbridge links it to Aomi on foot.
Getting there
From Tokyo Station, take the JR Yamanote Line to Shimbashi (about 3 minutes), then the Yurikamome Line: about 16 minutes to Odaiba-kaihinkoen or about 23 minutes to Tokyo Big Sight. The Rinkai Line serves Tokyo Teleport and Kokusai-tenjijo, with through trains on the Saikyo Line from Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ikebukuro. Nearest airport: Haneda, about 25 minutes by limousine bus to Tokyo Big Sight.
Seasons
Summer brings sea breezes, and a free lantern festival is held in Odaiba on Marine Day (the third Monday of July). Winter is known for illuminations and night views over the bay.
Watch-outs
Several landmarks closed in 2021–2022, including the Giant Sky Wheel, teamLab Borderless and VenusFort, so older guides may be out of date. Swimming is not allowed at Odaiba Seaside Park.
