Miyakojima
A flat coral island ringed by famously clear water, linked by long bridges to smaller islands.
- Character
- A mainly domestic resort island with growing Asian demand. It has a laid-back small-town centre (Hirara) and resort hotels spread around the coast. English speakers are rare.
- Why it stands out
- LCC access via Shimojishima Airport keeps fares down. Connected islands such as Irabu, Shimoji, Kurima and Ikema add quieter beaches and snorkel spots without any ferries.
- Getting there
- Miyako Airport (MMY): about 3h25m from Tokyo Haneda, 2h45m from Osaka Kansai and 55 minutes from Naha. Shimojishima Airport (SHI), connected to Miyako by bridge, handles low-cost Jetstar and Skymark flights and a direct flight from Seoul.
- Seasons
- Busiest in summer (July–August) and Golden Week. October–March is quieter and cheaper. Subtropical climate, warm all year, with typhoon risk from about June to October.
- Watch-outs
- A rental car is essential because buses are infrequent. Typhoons (June–October) can strand visitors, and box jellyfish appear from about June to October.
