Ishigaki

The gateway to the Yaeyama Islands, with coral reefs, Kabira Bay and short ferry hops to Taketomi and the Iriomote rainforest.

Character
A lively small harbour town that serves as a base for island-hopping. It is popular with Japanese holidaymakers, divers and families, and international visitor numbers are growing.
Why it stands out
Ferries leave every 20–40 minutes at midday for Taketomi (about 10 minutes) and Iriomote (35–45 minutes), so one base covers several islands. On Taketomi, Kaiji Beach is quieter than the busier Kondoi Beach.
Getting there
New Ishigaki Airport (ISG): about 3 hours nonstop from Tokyo Haneda, just under 3 hours from Osaka Kansai and about 1 hour from Naha. The airport bus to town takes about 30 minutes (around ¥540).
Seasons
Peak in summer and Golden Week. Winter is mild and quieter. Subtropical climate with typhoon season roughly June–October.
Watch-outs
Typhoons (June–October) can suspend ferries at short notice, so build in buffer days. You need a car or tours to get around the island.
