Atami
A hillside hot spring town by the sea at the top of the Izu Peninsula, about 40–50 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train.
- Character
- Atami is an onsen resort with many ryokan, museums and a beach in the town centre. It was a popular spot for company retreats in the late 1980s, declined after the early 1990s, and now draws individual travellers and families. The town is built on a steep slope, so it is not easy to get around on foot.
- Why it stands out
- Late spring and early summer have fewer crowds than peak summer weekends. Hatsushima, about 30 minutes away by ferry, is slower-paced than the town.
- Getting there
- Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo: about 40–50 minutes (about ¥4,000 one way). The Odoriko limited express takes about 80 minutes, and the JR Tokaido Line about 100–120 minutes. From Shin-Osaka, some Hikari trains run direct in about 2 hours 30–50 minutes. Nearest station: Atami. From Haneda Airport, the trip takes a little over 2 hours by train via Shinagawa.
- Seasons
- Plum blossoms bloom from early January to early March, and some trees flower from late November. Swimming at Sun Beach runs from mid-July to late August. Fireworks over the bay are held on set dates from April to December. Cherry blossoms are popular at the Atami Castle grounds in spring.
- Watch-outs
- Summer weekends and fireworks nights are busy, so book ryokan well ahead. The town is steep and the Yuyu loop bus is out of service, so use local buses or taxis. The MOA Museum closes on Thursdays and Kiunkaku on Wednesdays.
- Neighbourhoods
- Atami Station and Sun Beach: Town centre with shopping streets and a free footbath; the beach is about 5 minutes on foot from the station. / Kinomiya: One stop from Atami on the JR Ito Line, with Kinomiya Shrine 3 minutes from the station. / Hatsushima: Small island about 10 km offshore and about 4 km around, about 30 minutes by ferry.
