Tateshina

A highland resort area below Mt. Tateshina in central Nagano, with small lakes, hot spring inns, hiking and ski slopes.

Character
Tateshina lies at the northern end of the Yatsugatake range, above the city of Chino. Tateshina Kogen has old hot spring ryokan and family-run lodges, while Shirakaba Kogen around Lake Shirakaba has larger resort hotels. The Venus Line scenic road links the area with other Nagano highlands.
Why it stands out
The Venus Line can be congested on autumn foliage weekends, so weekdays or months outside mid to late October are calmer. Chino, at the foot of the resorts, is described as a hidden, rural place.
Getting there
Limited Express Azusa from Shinjuku to Chino: about 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes. From Osaka, take the Shinkansen to Nagoya (about 50–60 minutes), the Limited Express Shinano to Shiojiri (about 2 hours), then the Chuo Line to Chino (20–30 minutes). Buses run from Chino Station to Tateshina and Lake Shirakaba, and many hotels have shuttles. Nearest airport: Shinshu Matsumoto Airport (domestic flights); Haneda and Narita connect via Shinjuku.
Seasons
The Venus Line is open from late April to mid-November. Summer is for hiking and water sports, with alpine flowers in bloom. Autumn colours peak in mid to late October around Lake Tateshina and Lake Shirakaba. Winter brings skiing and hot springs, and Lake Megami freezes over.
Watch-outs
Public transport is limited, so a rental car is recommended; rental shops are near Chino Station. Parts of the Venus Line close in winter. The ropeway stops for 2–3 weeks of maintenance in April and November, and the Tateshina Kogen round bus runs only in season.
