Nasu

A cool highland below the Nasu volcanoes in northern Tochigi, with onsen, farms and an Imperial summer villa.

Character
Nasu Kogen is a highland that draws visitors from Tokyo in summer as a cool escape. The lower slopes have farms, animal parks, museums and an outlet mall, and Nasu-Yumoto Onsen sits higher up below Mt. Chausu, an active volcano. The Imperial family has a summer villa here.
Why it stands out
Summer, autumn weekends and long holidays are busy, so weekdays outside these times are calmer. The Nasu Heisei-no-Mori forest offers quiet walks.
Getting there
Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nasushiobara: about 70–80 minutes. Nasushiobara is at the foot of the mountain; Kanto Bus takes about 50 minutes from the west exit to Nasu-Yumoto. A car is much easier for visiting several sights.
Seasons
Summer is the peak season, when the highland is cooler than Tokyo. Autumn colour starts near the top of Mt. Chausu in late September to mid-October and reaches the lower highland from late October into early November. The Nasu Ropeway runs from about 20 March to 13 December (2026) and closes in winter.
Watch-outs
Buses are infrequent, with gaps of an hour or two off-peak, and are not covered by the JR Pass. The ropeway can close at short notice because of volcanic activity, wind or fog. Book rooms early for summer and autumn weekends.
