Areas
Ito
A built-up hot spring town on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, about 100 minutes from Tokyo by limited express.
- Character
- Ito is a hot spring city with hotels on the hills facing a rugged coast. The centre has public baths and historic buildings such as the Tokaikan. South of town are the villa district of Izu-Kogen, the volcanic Jogasaki Coast and Mount Omuro.
- Why it stands out
- Many guests book onsen packages and eat in their hotels, so the streets are quiet at night. Bus passes make Izu-Kogen and the Jogasaki Coast easy to reach without a car.
- Getting there
- JR Odoriko limited express from Tokyo Station: about 100 minutes, about one train an hour. Or take the Shinkansen to Atami, then a local train to Ito (about 20 minutes). From Osaka, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Atami (often changing at Shizuoka), then the JR Ito Line. Ito Station is where the JR Ito Line meets the Izukyu Line to Shimoda. Fly into Tokyo (Haneda or Narita).
- Seasons
- Cherry trees line the Matsukawa River walk from late March to early April. The Mount Omuro lift closes earlier from October to mid-March. Winters are mild and quieter, and spiny lobster often appears on winter menus.
- Watch-outs
- East coast roads often jam on weekends and holidays. The Japan Rail Pass does not cover the Izukyu Line south of Ito. The Tokaikan bath is open only on weekends and holidays.
- Neighbourhoods
- Central Ito: Station area with onsen hotels, public baths, the Tokaikan and the Matsukawa River walk. / Izu-Kogen: Villa and sightseeing district about 10 km south, with small museums, restaurants and Mount Omuro; 20 minutes by train from Ito. / Jogasaki Coast: Craggy volcanic coastline with a long hiking trail, a lighthouse and a 48 m suspension bridge.
