Gamagori
A seaside onsen town on Mikawa Bay, about 40 minutes by train from Nagoya.
- Character
- Gamagori is the largest onsen resort town in Aichi Prefecture, on the coast of Mikawa Bay. It has several hot spring areas, a small island linked to the shore by a bridge, a well-known small aquarium and the Laguna Ten Bosch marine resort. Winter brings onsen visitors, and summer brings swimmers and sailors.
- Why it stands out
- Weekdays are easier: parking at Takeshima costs more on weekends, holidays and Golden Week, and the Laguna Ten Bosch car parks get crowded around its evening shows.
- Getting there
- JR Tokaido Line from Nagoya to Gamagori: about 40 minutes by express. From Tokyo, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Toyohashi, then the JR Tokaido Line (about 10 minutes). From Osaka, take the Shinkansen to Nagoya and change to the JR Tokaido Line. Nearest airport: Chubu Centrair (Meitetsu to Kanayama, then JR). Nearest Shinkansen station: Toyohashi.
- Seasons
- Summer brings swimming, windsurfing and yachting, with the Gamagori Festival and fireworks in late July. The Miya Festival, where floats are carried into the sea, is held in October. Winter is onsen season. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are fairly mild.
- Watch-outs
- Sights are spread out, so plan on buses, taxis or a car. Clam digging can be cancelled because of weather or clam conditions. Event dates and prices change, so check before you go.
