Areas
Ashiya
A quiet, leafy residential city between Osaka and Kobe that runs from the Rokko Mountains down to Osaka Bay.
- Character
- Ashiya is a small, mostly residential city known for hillside mansions and the early-20th-century culture called "Hanshinkan Modernism". The city limits flashy signs and bans pachinko parlours. Visitors come for the Ashiya River, a Frank Lloyd Wright house, a literary museum and mountain hikes.
- Why it stands out
- The northern area around Hankyu Ashiyagawa Station is the quieter part of the city, close to the river walk and the hills.
- Getting there
- JR Kobe Line from Osaka Station or Kobe's Sannomiya to JR Ashiya: roughly 10 minutes. Hankyu (Ashiyagawa Station) and Hanshin (Ashiya and Uchide stations) also serve the city. From Tokyo, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then the JR Kobe Line via Osaka. Nearest airports: Osaka Itami and Kansai International.
- Seasons
- Spring is the highlight, with cherry blossoms along the Ashiya River and in Ashiya Park. In summer the Ashiya Summer Carnival and fireworks are held by the sea. Summers are warm, and winters are cool with light snow.
- Watch-outs
- Many sights are up steep slopes, so wear good shoes. Yodoko Guest House opens only three days a week. On the Rock Garden trails, wild boars may appear, so keep food put away.
- Neighbourhoods
- North Ashiya (Hankyu Ashiyagawa): Quieter hillside area near the riverside cherry trees, Yodoko Guest House and the trail to the Rock Garden. / Central and South Ashiya: Around JR and Hanshin Ashiya stations, with museums, parks and Shio-Ashiya Beach on the bay. / Okuike: Lake and villa area on Mt. Rokko at about 500–600 m, reached by the toll Royu Parkway or by bus.
